END OF TERM REVIEW

Please complete the survey below.

In addition, if you want to continue with Media Studies next term you MUST ensure that the following work has been completed.

Assignment 1a     (2 x analysis of magazine front cover)
Assignment 1b     (1 x your own original magazine front cover with annotations)

Both of these elements of Assignment 1 need to focus on how they appeal to the target audience/readership.

From the work that I have seen, it is clear that some of you have worked very hard and are achieving a high level but some others are not reaching the level expected and may have to have another go at the assignments.

In addition, you should have completed the analysis of the Levis Print advert and the Coca Cola moving image advert as well as reflections on the seat belt advert we watched and your own choice of advert. These pieces of work will be leveled shortly.

Other home learning to be finished: representation collage, The Game film, storyboard for advert competition.

If you have not completed these various elements we will need to discuss your progress.

THIS WEEK'S CLASS

Due to my absence this Wednesday, I am setting you a task to do as a piece of independent learning.

Last week we looked at the coke advert in detail and you came up with some excellent answers and started to use the media language.

This week I would like you to look at a different advert - two print ads for the same brand.

LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PRINT ADVERT AND ANALYSE IT.

Ensure that you are using media language:
representation, target audience, institution
denotation, connotation, mise en scene, logo, slogan, trademark, brand, direct address

Think deeply about why the logo is the way it is and how the product is shown. Think carefully about what message the brand is offering us and why.

SECURITY!

Due to our internet security policy we have to make some changes to the blog and who we allow to read it. Please could you change your security settings for your own blogs in the following way.

Go to SETTINGS - PERMISSIONS and change the READERS to ONLY PEOPLE I INVITE.

The add me to that: tholloway (at the usual Brentford school email address)

You may also add each other but no one from outside of the class.

THIS IS IMPORTANT AND SHOULD BE DONE IMMEDIATELY.

COKE ADVERT

Write up your analysis using the terminology we learnt in the lesson.

Aim for 250-400 words.

REMEMBER - your focus of attention is how the product is represented to the audience and what messages are being conveyed to the audience through the advert. Try to use media language including shot sizes, design.

ASSIGNMENT 2A AND 2B

We are beginning to look at our next assignment which is the cross media study.

We are going to look at advertising using across two media forms, moving image and print and we will also look at other forms including augmented reality.

Here are links to work which was done last year.

WED 2ND NOV

Here is the full presentation for yesterday.

The second half is about coming up with ideas for an advertising campaign.

To work on this please read the brief by going to the competition page of the blog and clicking on the Be Creative link.

Look at the examples of work from last year.
Think about ideas and come prepared to share them next week. If you can create a short storyboard/moodboard which explores some of the ideas you think might work.

ASSIGNMENT 1a

I have been amazed and cheered by your commitment to the course and the progress you are showing. It is clear from your approach in class and the blogs that you are grasping the main areas of Media Studies well.

However, in this first assignment you MUST be both detailed and concise, it is a real skill to do it and one you NEED to acquire.

REMEMBER, THE HELP SHEET ON THE ASSIGNMENT 1 PAGE IS THERE TO HELP, AS IT THE LIST OF USEFUL TERMINOLOGY.

Your task in 1a is to analys 2 contrasting front covers using a maximum of 350 words across the two. You MUST identify the features using some (not all) of the terminology, you must describe briefly AND most importantly, you MUST explain the connotations. In addition you should include a clear understanding of how and why the front cover appeals to a specific target audience.

It is a lot to ask but you can do it.

Final note. Please, please ensure that the somewhat distracting chatter doesn't occur again. It would be a shame to lose some of you from the course because of a failure to adhere to the basic rules in the classroom. I like productive chatter on task and when focussed, I really don't want it at other times and neither to the majority of the class.

GCSE SPECIFICATION

AQA Media Studies Specification

The specification is a document meant for teachers but can still be useful for you to look at.

The first area you might like to read is about Assignment 1 on page 9, 10 and 11.

Assignment Bank 1 includes a range of Media platforms for study BUT we will focus on just one, PRINT and we will be looking in detail at Magazine covers.

Tomorrows' lesson will begin this process as we look at the specifics of image description or denotation and learning the appropriate media terminology.

See you all then.

E-LEARNING TASK WEEK 1

Your first task comes in two parts.

One relates to your BLOG, the other more directly to Media Studies.

TASK 1

Complete designing your blog and make it your own using the designer template and add another GADGET below the BLOG LIST - LINK LIST.

In Link list I would like you to put links to any MEDIA RELATED sites which you think might be useful to your study of the Media over the next two years. WEBSITES COULD INCLUDE: magazines TV channels, academic, media industry, marketing, advertising etc. etc. At this stage I only want you to add 5 links, so choose wisely.

Also, I would like you to review the setting including the privacy settings to ensure that you and your parents understand them. At this stage I DO NOT want you to change the settings and restrict them. In good time we will define these settings in such a way that ONLY myself and students in the class can access your BLOGS.

TASK 2

Find 4 contrasting images and add them into your first post. Choose these images really carefully and describe the image in some detail underneath. In addition, I would like you to explain why you chose the image and how it makes you feel.

I am looking to see how you write, your powers of observation and your ability to explain emotional or intellectual responses to visual stimuli.

THESE TASK NEED TO BE COMPLETED BY WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIME 12.50pm.

BLOGS - IMPORTANT

Well done all of you for creating your own blogs, I have managed to list nearly all of you on my blog list which will allow you all to connect to each other.

However, there were four of you whose blog addresses weren't accurate on the list I had, so I will need them to emailed to my school email asap.

WELCOME

Welcome to the new year 9 GCSE students You have chosen well and we hope this year will be both stimulating and rewarding.

A few quick rules:
  • Attendance: you need to be here every session otherwise you will miss out. It's just like your other school classes. Full attendance is vital to succeed.
  • Completing homestudy: you will be set some homestudy to complete. This will put you under some pressure but they are not optional so please ensure that you complete them when asked. Most work will be short and to be completed online using your blog.
  • ASSIGNMENTS which are assessed will need to be completed as hard copies for submission and should not be posted on your blogs.
  • The 3rd ASSIGNMENT involves making a trailer or 2 minute film opening which will be posted on Youtube when completed.

BLOGGER and Youtube
  • A lot of your work will be completed using blogger - this is where you will post your homestudy and embed video and documents including presentation, we want you to become experts at online working and it is vital to your success on this course that you do as you have less time in class than the year 10s doing the same course.
  • Setting up blogs: you will need a blog for your work, you will also need a youtube account and a scribd account follow the links at the side to start creating these. It is better if you create new accounts JUST for Media studies as this will be easier for your to manage in the long term. WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORDS (ideally use one for all three accounts). As Google own Youtube and Blogger if you set up a gmail account it will work for both.
  • Online working: keep yourself safe, never reveal any personal details on your blog and restrcit who can view it to the class, me and your parents only you can do this through
  • your accounts should be called (your first name) GCSE Media, make the address the same
  • passwords make them memorable and write them down
CREATIVITY
  • This is a course designed to help your develop your critical and analytical skills and then apply what you have learnt through creative exercises. The first two assignments are designed to develop these skills through examining different areas of the Media and then doing the planning task which involve magazine front cover creation, posters, storyboards etc. The thrid assignment pushes you further as you move beyond the planning into the creation of the actual media artifact in our case a film trailer or opening sequence.
  • However, creativitiy is at the heart of the course and there will be opportunities for your to showcase your work through the year. So if your want to write scripts, make films, take photos, create magazines, music videos, adverts, news items, whatever you want to do the opportunity is there and you will be able to book time in C1 to complete your work.
